Hello everyone, When I think of someone I have influenced recently, I instantly think of my significant other. We both rely on each other daily not only as a couple, but as best friends. We are very supportive of one another in all of our endeavors both as individuals and as a couple. The influence we have on each other is substantial in our day-to-day routines, both of which consist of work, school, and other personal commitments. Most recently, I assisted my significant other in searching for and attaining a new place of employment as her previous job closed operations. I had to provide motivation and support to her, as it is not easy to lose a job, especially when it is not your fault. My significant other prides herself in her work as as a veterinary technician. Her passion and love for animals reaches beyond anything I've ever seen before. I'm really proud of her accomplishments and I wish to see more from her. The form of influence I used to motivate her to pursue other positions at other clinics could be described by a lateral influence attempt. I understand that upward, downward, and lateral influence are terms used in regard to organizations, but I feel the use of lateral influence in this scenario is appropriate. Lateral influence incites a form of coalition, or team building (Yukl, G., & Falbe, C. M. (1990). My significant other and I are peers. I am not made of higher authority to her. We are equals and approach and respect each other as such. We collectively advocate ideas rather than act as lone proponents, and that action alone resembles lateral influence. In using lateral influence, I was able to assist her in developing ideas of new places of employment to apply for, why go there, what benefits will be provided, salary, short and long-term goals, etc. We covered everything. I helped her re-structure and add to her resume, and we practiced interview techniques. Soon after, she received several interviews and just recently earned a new position at a new clinic. I couldn't be more proud of her and I would say my use of lateral influence was successful because of that. If I wanted a different outcome or approach to the situation, the next best form of influence I would have used would have been downward influence as this would illustrate me envisioning a clear goal, and helping someone see and reach that goal. An inspiring vision does not necessarily mean you help that person do everything, but that allows the other person to take action and achieve that vision themselves (Yukl, G., Kim, H., & Falbe, C. M. (1996). However, my appreciation for coalition or a team concept overrides that decision. To address the second portion of this discussion, I was recently influenced by my work supervisor to to keep producing excellent work in my organization by assisting in training segments. My supervisor influenced me to take on leadership roles in training fellow coworkers and new employees on various functions in our office. Working in a federal government mailroom requires a lot of effort, initiative, and consistent support of peers. We have a constant chain of incoming mail that requires correspondence processing as well as daily mailroom functions that need conducted. With an ever changing workplace where employees leave, enter, and move around, we are always training. My supervisor sought for me to assist other employees because I can articulate instructions well with patience. I have trained several coworkers on mail delivery courier routes as well as correspondence processing data systems. The form of influence my supervisor used to influence my behavior could be described as downward influence, as I am seeking the vision set forth by my supervisor, who wishes to have my coworkers trained proficiently on new functions. In providing the training to my coworkers, I am assisting my supervisor in the process of downward influence. The actions I demonstrate also assist my supervisor in reaching our organizational goals with our daily routines. References:
